The Spiritual Boomerang

Have you heard about the man who bought a new boomerang? Word has it, he never really enjoyed the new one, because he grew weary trying to throw the old one out! This may seem humorous to some; however, it paints a vivid picture of the believer in Jesus trying to get rid of the old man. Many Christians can relate to the this pattern of trying to rid themselves of old sinful habits only to be discouraged to find themselves right back where they started, immersed  in sin.
Paul was no stranger to the struggle with old nature though he had a long religious resume and was a follower of Jesus. In the book of Romans chapter seven Paul describes his struggle with sin. His words in verse fifteen “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do”, are descriptive of the power of sin over our lives.
It would be sad if Paul were to end his letter here to the Roman church by saying, this is the life you have been destined to live; never fully enjoying your new life but always struggling to rid yourself of the old. Paul closes chapter seven instead by asking the rhetorical question “Who will rescue me from this body of death? In the midst of the struggle and the weariness of the battle trying to rid his old nature, Paul looks outside himself for the answer and asks “Who can rescue me”. Paul supplies us with the answer in verse twenty-five, “Thanks be to God – through Jesus Christ our Lord!”
It All Comes Back to Jesus. If the question is how I rid myself of the old nature, then the answer must be Jesus. Have you found yourself struggling to live the "new life" promised when you first became a Christian, more focused on how to rid yourself of sin rather than living your new life in Jesus – maybe it’s time you come back to Jesus? Consider this your invitation to join us for worship and fellowship as we discover God's truths through Jesus our Lord.
